McDonald's, STATS Analyze NFL's Biggest Hits with Innovative Pounder Index™ for Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese

Oak Brook and Morton Grove, IL - October 24, 2005 - The football fanatics at McDonald's have called upon STATS LLC, the world's leading sports information provider, to determine the National Football League's biggest hits using STATS' unprecedented Pounder Index™.

The Pounder Index™ developed by McDonald's(R) and sponsored by the Double Quarter Pounder(R) with Cheese, is the first statistic ever to translate the impact of a football hit into a rating. Each Sunday of the NFL season, McDonald's will utilize the 10-point scale Pounder Index™ to reveal the biggest hits from the previous week's games on CBS Sports' NFL Today "Chalk Talk" segment.

Football fans can also go online to CBS Sportsline and see an archive of the NFL's biggest hits, learn more about the Pounder Index™ and the McDonald's® Double Quarter Pounder® with cheese at http://www.sportsline.com/pounderindex.

"Like our customers we're passionate about sports and passionate about our burgers. The Pounder Index is the visual representation where these two come together," said Raul Reyes, McDonald's director of US marketing, Young Adult Team.

"It has been a great pleasure for our staff here at STATS to work with the die-hard football fans at McDonald's and create the Pounder Index™," said Greg Kirkorsky, Director of National Accounts, STATS LLC. "STATS is always looking at creative ways to measure new aspects of the game and enhance the way sports are viewed and enjoyed for fans at home."

About The Pounder Index™ The exact mathematic formula for generating the Pounder Index™, as developed by the sports statistics gurus STATS, is an industry secret. However, the fundamentals are as follows:

  • Start with a clean hit. No penalties or cheap shots allowed.
  • Add the weight times speed of all intersecting players. A three-man pile up would look like this: (M=Mass, A=acceleration) (M1)(A1)=F1 (M2)(A2)=F2 + (M3)(A3)=F3 F1+F2+F3
  • Adjust for angle of attack, giving the highest value to head-on impact. The result is the Pounder Index™. F1+F2+ F3 (pA) = Pounder Index™
